PROBLEM
Malcolm was in his late 60’s, he lived on his own and was suffering from dementia and MS, Malcolm’s niece became suspicious about a carer who lived next door, she thought that Malcolm was being financially abused. The matter was reported to the police who interviewed the neighbour who denied stealing anything from Malcolm, an advice file was eventually submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service who decided that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the neighbour.
SOLUTION
It was suspected that around £8000 had been stolen by the neighbour over a 10 x month period when we were informed by Malcolm’s niece. We agreed a plan and commenced an undercover operation to provide evidence to the niece to identify any dishonesty issues. We deployed a covert camera in a strategic position in the Malcolm’s house which was motion activated and recorded both visually and audio. A £20 note was strategically positioned and on the second day, as can be clearly seen and heard on the video, the subject took the bait and blatantly stole the money.
OUTCOME
The plan was to obtain several captures of the subject in order that she couldn’t say it was a one-off, unfortunately, she was evicted from her home a few days after the first capture. We packaged the evidence together and presented it to our client who was absolutely delighted with the result. The client then went to the police and prosecution took place which resulted in a guilty plea at Court and she received a suspended sentence on the mitigation that she was a recovering drug addict.
The operation attracted a considerable amount of national media attention and the footage that we obtained has been shown on several national TV programmes.
